Professor Donald B. McIntyre – geologist (mountaineer, piper, scholar and writer) – was born in Edinburgh in 1923. He was educated at Giffnock, George Watson College (Edinburgh) and later Grantown Grammar School in Inverness-shire. After attending Edinburgh University from where he graduated in geology, McIntyre continued his studies in Switzerland. Amongst his professional positions are included: Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh; Lecturer in Geology at Edinburgh University (1948-54); and, Professor of Geology, Pomona College, Claremount, California (1954-89). In his retirement, McIntyre settled in Kinfauns where he became a contributor to the cultural life of Perthshire – he was a past chair of the Perth Civic Trust and a member of the Perth Burns Club. Donald B. McIntyre died 21st October 2009.
