John Burns Hynd ~ Trade Unionist and Labour MP


John Burns Hynd (1902-1971) was born in Perth and educated at St Ninian’s Episcopal Church and Caledonian Road School. After leaving school, Hynd first worked as a railway clerk (London, Midland and Scottish Railways) in Perth, until 1925. Involvement in the labour movement saw him work firstly for the National Union of Railwaymen (trade union clerk) and eventually became Labour M.P. in Sheffield in 1944, a position he held until 1970. Amongst his political offices are included: Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1945-7); Minister for Germany and Austria (1947); Minister of Pensions (1950-5); and Chairman of the Anglo-German Parliamentary Group. In 1966, Hynd wrote Williy Brandt: A Pictorial Biography. Hynd married Elsie Margaret Doran in 1927 and they had a daughter together.
