Wine and spirit merchant born in Perth in 1856 and educated at Perth Academy. With his brother Thomas he built up the family business into a huge company and present day multinational. He was elected Liberal MP for Invernessshire from 1900 to 1916 and then was elevated to the House of Lords as Lord Forteviot. As such he was the first of the Whisky Barons. Dewar used a small part of his considerable fortune in philanthropic activity in Perth – the Ice Rink is named after him.
