Although born in Edinburgh in 1803 (some sources detail him as born at Kilgraston) Francis Grant was the fourth son of a Perthshire landowner, Francis Grant of Kilgraston. Initially trained as a lawyer he soon became a celebrated portrait painter and painter of sporting scenes. Amongst his body of work are two of the Duke of Wellington, Meet of H.M. Staghounds and Melton Hunt – commissioned for the Duke of Wellington. Made President of the Royal Academy in 1866, Francis Grant was knighted in 1866. He died in 1878.
