General James Hope Grant ~ Soldier


Brother of the painter Francis Grant, James Hope Grant was born in 1808 at Kilgraston, Perthshire. As a soldier he received military recognition during the two Sikh Wars of 1845-49, the Indian Mutiny (1857) and later the 1860 attack on China. He attained the rank of General and received a knighthood. Between 1861 and 1865 he was the commander of the Army of Madras. He died in 1875.
