Archibald Menzies ~ Naturalist and Surgeon


A naturalist and surgeon that took part during the round-the-world trip aboard the Discovery under Captain George Vancouver of 1790-95. He was born in 1754 at Weems in Perthshire. During the trip Archibald Menzies made original collections of plants from across the globe, with important finds from British Columbia and Chile. He brought back the Auracaria (Chilean Pine), known now as the Monkey Puzzle Tree. In 1790 he was made President of the Linnaean Society. Archibald Menzies died in 1842.
