Johannes Machabeus ~ Dominican Prior and Professor of Theology


Between 1532 and 1534, Johannes Machebeus was Dominican Prior at Perth. As a religious reformer he was accused of heresy and sought refuge in England where he converted to Protestantism. There he married and eventually settled firstly in Germany and then in Denmark, where he was made Professor of Theology at Copenhagen University in 1542. Johannes Machabeus translated Luther’s Bible into Danish. He died around 1557. Despite his name, Johannes Machabeus was a member of the Macalpine clan.
